The successful candidate will research phytoplankton abundance, diversity, and productivity in the Baltic Sea. This includes planning and conducting offshore field studies, taxonomic identification and validation of species, as well as publishing scientific results. Additionally, the scientist will actively promote the dissemination of research findings to relevant user groups.

Qualification

The prerequisites for a successful application are a PhD in biological oceanography or a related field, as well as solid experience in the identification of phytoplankton using microscopy and flow cytometry. Additionally, the ability and willingness to conduct research at sea is required. Very good English skills, both written and spoken, are also required. The successful applicant has a proven track record of excellent publications.

Strong taxonomic knowledge in marine phytoplankton is expected; in-depth knowledge of the phytoplankton of the Baltic Sea is desirable. Experience with in situ flow cytometers is an advantage.

Junior Professorship (W1) in Marine Evolutionary Genomics

as a temporary civil servant. The junior professorship is initially for a period of 3 years and can be extended for another 3 years upon successful evaluation. We are expecting applications from early career researchers with a very good doctoral degree in the area of genetics of aquatic organisms, evolutionary biology, evolutionary genomics or related areas. The successful applicant will have in-depth knowledge in evolutionary genomics and bioinformatics and intends to or has already started to develop an independent research line after their doctorate, best demonstrated through excellent scientific publications. The research area should be in an innovative field of marine evolutionary biology and genomics, involving multicellular animals or plants. In the BMBF-funded CAPTN Energy joint project "Saltwater electrolysis using marine bacteria on titanium gas diffusion layers", new technological approaches will be applied using seawater directly as a source for the production of hydrogen (H₂) by means of electrolysis and biocatalysts with improved efficiency. Saltwater electrolysis offers the possibility to convert the "clean" electricity generated at offshore wind turbines into the sustainable storage medium H₂. Marine microbes will be used on porous gas diffusion layers to supplement or replace conventional catalyst layers. The aim is to establish marine microbial consortia that optimally support H₂ production under the conditions prevalent in saltwater electrolysis. In this way, the overvoltage will be reduced, undesired side reactions suppressed and prior seawater purification no longer necessary. Therefore, the process of H₂ generation from seawater can be carried out as environmentally friendly and cost-effective as possible. The project will be carried out in close cooperation with materials scientists from the Kiel University of Applied Sciences and Element22 GmbH.

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is now considered in an unprecedented global scale in most, if not all, ambitious mitigation scenarios. Yet, our understanding of efficacy, additionality and side-effects remains limited, not least because representation of CDR options in Earth system models of various complexity remains a challenge. The CDR model intercomparison project (CDRMIP) aims to make a contribution to our knowledge of the Earth system response to novel interferences into the climate system, investigating efficacy, additionality and side-effects of explicit CDR representations in portfolio scenarios.

The research group Earth system dynamics in the research unit Marine Meteorology of the research division Ocean and Climate Dynamics is offering a position for a

Scientist (m/f/d)

to build a repository of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) model implementations and contribute to CDRMIP analysis

starting as soon as possible.

Job Description

In the first part of the project, the scientist will be tasked with building a comprehensive, sharable repository of example CDR model implementations. The repository of CDR implementations will encompass terrestrial and marine methods. For this, we will use the outcomes of ongoing projects that we are involved in, notably RESCUE and CDRmare and CDRterra, but also collaborate with international CDR experts in the context of CDRMIP.
In the second part of the project, the scientist will be analysing the multi-model ensemble simulations of CDRMIP to identify robustness of model responses and identify poorly constrained processes to inform future model development as well as scenario designs. The new CDRMIP model simulation, will allow for the analysis of portfolio implementations of CDR. The simulations will be a combination of idealised overshoot scenarios and realistic but single CDR implementation scenarios. We will complement these efforts with additional simulations with an Earth system model to understand each method's individual efficacy and side effects, and their respective additionalities.

Qualification

Required:

• M.Sc. in natural sciences or data science
• Experience in Earth system model development and code documentation
• Excellent English language skills (oral and written)

Desired qualifications:

• PhD in natural sciences or data science
• Experience concerning carbon dioxide removal modelling
• Well-developed networking and communication skills
• Experience in working with an interdisciplinary team or integrated assessment scenarios
• Previous experience with online databases
• Suitability to the existing research group

With the new SAFAtor project the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam and the 黑料视频 Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel will further enhance these tasks. Global monitoring of the Earth system has so far been carried out mainly by land-based scientific infrastructures, which cover only accounts for about 30 percent of the Earth's surface. The ocean, particularly the seabed, plays a central role in climate regulation and is the site of hazardous natural disasters, yet remains inadequately monitored. As a result, there are significant gaps in the knowledge of key parameters. To fill these gaps 黑料视频 will use the SAFAtor project to equip telecommunications cables on the seabed with innovative sensor technology. These so-called SMART cables will provide valuable real-time data on climate and geological hazards such as earthquakes and tsunamis.

The Junior Professor is expected to initiate and lead excellent and internationally recognized research in the field of meteorology with links to ocean and climate research. We are looking for a candidate with research experience and interests in one or more of the following areas:

• Observations and remote sensing
• Theory, modelling and diagnostic of ocean-atmosphere interactions
• Understanding the processes of atmospheric dynamics and physics in the troposphere and stratosphere

• Development of atmospheric components of Earth system models

The Junior Professor shall thematically and methodically enhance the existing capacity of the research unit, expressed by a research plan. We particularly expect interdisciplinary cooperation within the research division and across disciplines within Kiel Marine Sciences (KMS). The professorship is associated with teaching in the Kiel Bachelor's/Master's degree programs (within the teaching obligation) in English and potentially also in German in the field of meteorology and climate physics, for which a suitable teaching concept must be submitted.
