Through our research and our commitment to the transfer of knowledge and technology, we contribute significantly to the preservation of the function and protection of the ocean for future generations. The Biological Oceanography research unit investigates how marine plankton responds to environmental changes in the ocean and what effects this has on ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles, particularly the uptake and storage of carbon dioxide in the sea. Methods used include the analysis of dissolved organic substances, microbiological rate measurements, incubation experiments, controlled laboratory cultures, and field studies in various marine regions.
The Research Unit Biological Oceanography within Research Division 2, Marine Biogeochemistry, offers a position as a
starting on July 1, 2025, subject to approval.
Job Description
The position is part of a research project that investigates the contribution of marine microalgae (phytoplankton) to natural climate protection. The successful candidate will collaborate with regional marine technology companies to develop a monitoring box that can be used at the ocean surface. In addition to the hardware, methods will be developed to capture and process sensor and image data (AI for phytoplankton).
Qualification
The prerequisites for a successful application are a university degree in a technical or scientific field. Furthermore, knowledge in marine sensor technology, as well as in the areas of development, maintenance, data processing, and analysis, is required. Additionally, experience, ability, and willingness to participate in seagoing expeditions are required. Very good English skills, both written and spoken, are required.
Experience with temperature, conductivity, oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane, and fluorescence sensors would be desirable.

The position is available for a funding period of 24 months.
The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class E10 TV枚D-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a part-time position according to 50% of a full-time equivalent. The position cannot be split, flexible working time models are generally possible.
