Projects & Expeditions
The geoscientific projects result from my work with in-house colleagues, particularly in RD4. Moreover, I engage in a number of international collaborations.
Many of my projects involve expeditions, thus I am often at sea. We also borrow out our instruments as part of academic collaborations
Technological Projects
The Helmholtz Validation project 68 develops a real-time 360° surveillance system for remotely operated vehicles to increase situational awareness and to map the seafloor.

Provenance of visualization workflows
Since 2021 we explore the archivability, repeatability and comparability of visualization workflows as a prerequisite for scientific work on visualized content.

ASDDSA - Active Suction Device for Deep-Sea Applications
Since 2022 we develop in the SPP2100 a soft robotic suction sampler to probe the seafloor, partnering with the MATCH of the Leibniz Universität Hannover.

Blue Health Tech - Hyperquant
Since 2022, we develop with partners of the UKSH a game engine based framework to visualize volumetric MRT images using immersive technology such as the ARENA2 lab.

Since 2018, we developed with RD4 and partners at Kiel university a system for the in-situ measurement of flow parameters in hot pyroclastic volcanic ash clouds.

Point Cloud Visualization
Since 2021, the of the group supports the ARENA2 simulator. We use it to visualize ocean currents and photogrammetric seafloor outcrop models.

Volumetric Ocean Current Visualization
In 2021 we integrated the digital globe of the DLR in die ARENA2. Among other things, it allows the visualization of ocean current models using the Intel OSPRay technology.

The Virtual Sealfoor
In 2017 the Helmholtz Association and the Cluster of Excellence the primary equipment of the ARENA2 lab with the core themes telepresence, immersion and transdisciplinarity.
Marine Geoscientific Projects

In 2016 I led an expedition funded by the Schmidt Ocean Institute to completely map the Niua South Hydrothermal Field in the southwest Pacific.

Hydrothermal Vents of the Endeavour Segment
Since 2015, I continuously map the major hydrothermal systems of the Endeavour Segment vent fields along the Juan de Fuca Ridge.

Axial Seamount
In 2014 I worked with MBARI to gather photogrammetric profiles of the crater walls at Axial Seamount, initiating a collaboration that lasts to this day.

Kolbinsey Ridge
In 2016 I photogrammetrically mapped lava flows of the Kolbinsey Ridge north of Iceland.

Charles Darwin Volcanic Field
In 2010 we explored and mapped the CDVF southwest of the Cape Verdean island of Santo Antao using photogrammetric methods. This is a site featureing deep-sea explosive volcanism.

Santorini
In 2017 I photogrammetrically mapped the inner crater walls of Santorini and the outer foothills of the island with the goal of extending the stratigraphic profile.
