Working Group 'Seafloor Morphology'

Multibeam systems allow making detailed maps of the ocean floor.
The seafloor morphology group investigates the processes that shape the ocean floor and the role its morphology plays in the ocean system. We do this by leveraging our seagoing capacities to map the ocean floor and by confronting interpretations of seafloor structures with our joint observational, analytical, modeling, and data science expertise.
DAM underway bathymetry
As part of the "Underway Research Data" project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and supported by the German Marine Research Alliance (DAM), we use the transits of German research vessels to map the ocean floor systematically. We are partners of the international GEBCO Seabed 2030 initiative and support the common goal of a global, high-resolution, and free seabed map.
