Marine biodiscovery / biotechnology / bioprospecting

Our bioprospecting efforts are directed at understanding the true biosynthetic potential of marine invertebrates (sponges, tunicates), fish, macrophytes as well their associated microbiota for discovery of bioactive secondary metabolites for potential development. We address global health challenges, by focusing on e.g., cancer, and pathogens causing diseases in human, crops, food or aquaculture. Macroorganisms will be extracted automatically using green extraction techniques, such as ASE and SFE. When working with microorganisms (bacteria and fungi), we apply innovative techniques to i) increase their cultivability in laboratory conditions, and ii) activate their silent biosynthetic gene clusters (e.g., by co-cultivation) to produce new metabolites. Any organism with high bioactivity and novel chemistry will be submitted to discovery pipeline for purification (HPLC and others) and 3D chemical characterization (NMR, MS and other spectroscopic techniques) of new molecules. Purification of target (new) compounds is monitored by MS-based metabolomics, bioinformatics and bioassays. We are also interested in valorization of waste material.
